New Delhi Railway Station sits at the heart of the capital, surrounded by some of Delhi's most interesting neighbourhoods, heritage sites, and markets. Whether you have a few hours between trains or are spending a week in the city, here's what to explore near the station.
1. Paharganj Main Bazaar (5 Minutes by Foot)
Exit through the western side of the station and step straight into one of Delhi's most colourful markets. Main Bazaar stretches over a kilometre, lined with shops selling textiles, leather goods, silver jewellery, spices, and street food. This is essential Delhi.
2. Connaught Place (10 Minutes by Metro)
Take the Yellow Line from New Delhi metro station to Rajiv Chowk and you're at the heart of Lutyens' Delhi. Connaught Place is a Georgian circular colonnade of shops, restaurants, and cafes — a great contrast to the bustle of Paharganj.
3. Chandni Chowk & Old Delhi (7 Minutes by Metro)
Three stops on the Yellow Line takes you to Chandni Chowk. From here, walk to the Red Fort (Lal Qila), Jama Masjid, and the ancient spice market Khari Baoli. Old Delhi is best visited in the morning before the heat builds up.
4. National Museum (15 Minutes by Metro)
Take the Yellow Line to Udyog Bhawan for the National Museum of India — one of the country's finest collections spanning 5,000 years. Entry: ₹20 Indian nationals, ₹650 foreign tourists. Closed Mondays.
5. India Gate & Kartavya Path (25 Minutes by Metro)
Delhi's most iconic landmark. Take the Yellow Line to Central Secretariat then walk. India Gate is a war memorial and beloved evening picnic spot. The view down Kartavya Path toward Rashtrapati Bhavan is breathtaking.
6. Qutub Minar (45 Minutes by Metro)
Delhi's UNESCO World Heritage site and the world's tallest brick minaret. Yellow Line south to Qutub Minar station (end of line). The complex includes the Iron Pillar and stunning medieval ruins. Entry: ₹40 Indian, ₹600 foreign.
7. Sadar Bazaar (10 Minutes by Auto)
India's largest wholesale market is just north of the station — fascinating for the sheer scale and variety of goods. Even if you're not buying, the wholesale energy is uniquely Delhi.
Conclusion
New Delhi Railway Station is one of the best-positioned bases in the country. Stay at Hotel Sun International on Arakashan Road — 5 minutes from the station and a metro ride from virtually every major attraction in Delhi.
